31 October Journal Prompts: Face What You've Been Avoiding

October ends with a night that's all about fear, so it's a good month to look honestly at your own. Not the jump-scare kind, but the quieter fears that decide more than we'd like to admit: the conversation we keep putting off, the thing we stopped trying, the story we tell ourselves about why now isn't the right time.

These 31 prompts give you one a day from 1 October to Halloween. They move in four weeks, from naming your fears, to noticing what you avoid, to questioning the stories fear tells, to taking small brave steps, with three final prompts for the last days of the month.

How to use these prompts

  • Answer one prompt a day. Five to ten minutes is enough.
  • Write the first honest answer, not the tidy one. You can always add to it.
  • Be curious rather than harsh. The goal is to understand your fear, not to win an argument with it.
  • If you miss a day, skip ahead to today's prompt instead of catching up.

Week 1: Name it

Fear is easier to work with once it has a name. This week is simply about seeing clearly.

  1. What am I afraid of right now, in plain words?
  2. Which fear have I carried the longest?
  3. Where do I feel fear in my body before I notice it in my thoughts?
  4. What fear do I rarely admit, even to myself?
  5. What am I afraid people would think if they really knew me?
  6. Which of my fears are about the future, and which are about the past repeating?
  7. If my biggest fear were a character in a story, what would it look like and what would it say?

Week 2: What you avoid

Most fear doesn't look like fear. It looks like being busy, putting things off or saying "I'm fine". We look at this pattern more closely in Signs You're Living on Autopilot.

  1. What conversation have I been putting off?
  2. What decision am I delaying, and what am I afraid will happen if I make it?
  3. What do I reach for when I want to avoid feeling uncomfortable?
  4. What have I stopped trying because I once failed at it?
  5. Where do I say "I'm fine" when I'm not?
  6. What would I have to face if I stopped being busy?
  7. What am I tolerating because changing it feels scarier than staying?

Week 3: The stories fear tells

Fear is a storyteller. This week you check its stories against the evidence.

  1. What does my fear say will happen, and how often has it been right before?
  2. Whose voice does my fear sound like?
  3. What's the worst realistic outcome, and could I handle it?
  4. What evidence do I have against the story my fear is telling?
  5. Which fear once protected me but no longer fits my life?
  6. What am I assuming about myself that I've never actually tested?
  7. If a friend told me this fear, what would I say to them?

Week 4: Courage in small doses

Courage isn't the absence of fear. It's acting while you still feel it, in steps small enough to take. If you want help turning insight into action, see What Comes After Self-Awareness?

  1. What's one small thing I could do this week that scares me a little?
  2. When have I been brave before, and what helped me?
  3. What would I do tomorrow if fear weren't deciding?
  4. What's the smallest possible first step toward the thing I've been avoiding?
  5. Who could I tell about this fear so I'm not carrying it alone?
  6. What would it cost me to stay exactly where I am for another year?
  7. What have I done this month that would surprise the version of me from 1 October?

Halloween: Take off the mask

Three prompts for the last days of October, when everyone else is putting a mask on.

  1. Which mask do I wear most often, and what is it hiding?
  2. What fear am I ready to leave behind with October?
  3. What do I want to be less afraid of by this time next year?

A gentle note

These prompts are for everyday fears: hesitation, avoidance and the stories we tell ourselves. If fear or anxiety feels constant or overwhelming, a journal isn't enough on its own. Please talk to someone you trust or a health professional.

Keep going after October

Noticing your fears is the first step. Seeing the patterns behind them, day after day, is what Volume 1: Awareness is built for: a 30-day guided journal with a morning and evening page every day, so you always know what to write.
