The Soul Clarity Journal
50 Self-Reflection Questions to Ask Yourself
Most of us go months without asking ourselves anything difficult. Days fill up, the weeks pass, and the questions that would actually change something never get asked. A good self-reflection question interrupts that: it's specific, slightly uncomfortable, and hard to answer with “fine”.
These 50 questions are grouped by area of life, so you can go straight to whichever part feels unclear at the moment.
What makes a good self-reflection question
- It's specific. “Am I happy?” is too big to answer. “What part of my week do I look forward to?” gives you something real.
- It asks about evidence, not intentions. What you actually did last week tells you more than what you meant to do.
- It's slightly uncomfortable. If a question doesn't make you pause, it probably won't teach you anything.
How to answer them
- Choose three to five, not all fifty. Depth beats coverage.
- Write the answers down. Thinking about a question tends to go in circles; writing forces it into a shape you can examine — our self-reflection journal prompts give you structure for that.
- Answer with examples. “I've been distracted” is vague; “I checked my phone eleven times during dinner” is something you can work with.
- Notice which question you want to skip. That's usually the one worth answering.
Questions about your life direction
- If nothing changed in the next year, how would I feel about that?
- What am I building towards at the moment — and did I actually choose it?
- Which part of my life feels most alive right now?
- What did I want at twenty that I no longer want?
- If I had to simplify my life by a third, what would go?
- What am I doing out of habit rather than intention?
- What would “a good year” actually look like for me?
- What would I regret not trying?
Questions about work and purpose
- What part of my work do I lose track of time in?
- What am I good at that I don't enjoy?
- What would make my work feel more like mine?
- Am I busy or am I productive — and what's the evidence?
- What am I learning at the moment, and is it what I want to be learning?
- If my job disappeared tomorrow, what would I miss?
- What boundary would make the biggest difference to my working week?
- What does success look like to me, rather than to the people around me?
Questions about relationships
- Who brings out the version of me I like most?
- Which relationships am I investing in, and which am I coasting on?
- What do I need from the people close to me that I've never asked for?
- Where am I saying yes when I mean no?
- How do I behave when I'm stressed, and how does that land on the people around me?
- Who have I been meaning to reach out to?
- What kind of friend, partner or parent do I want to be this year?
- What conversation am I avoiding?
Questions about energy, health and routines
- What does my energy usually look like across a week?
- What consistently restores me — and how often do I actually do it?
- Which routine is quietly costing me more than it gives?
- When do I sleep, eat and move well, and what's different about those days?
- What am I using to numb out rather than genuinely rest?
- What would “looking after myself” look like this week, in practical terms?
- What's one small change that would make my mornings easier?
- How do I usually feel at the end of an ordinary day — and why?
Questions about time and attention
- Where did my last free hour go?
- What takes up most of my time, and is it what I'd choose?
- What do I keep saying I have no time for?
- What could I stop doing without anyone noticing?
- How much of my day is actually mine?
- What deserves an hour of my full attention this week?
Questions about growth and change
- What's harder for me than I usually admit?
- What feedback have I now heard more than once?
- What am I better at than I was a year ago?
- What belief about myself is due for an update?
- What would I attempt if I knew I'd be supported?
- What's the next uncomfortable thing worth doing?
Questions for a monthly or yearly review
- What are three things that went well — and why did they?
- What drained the most energy, and was it worth it?
- What did I learn about myself?
- What did I say yes to that I shouldn't have?
- What do I want to carry into the next few months?
- What's one thing I'll do differently, starting now?
What to do with your answers
Honest answers are only half of it. The value shows up when something changes as a result — and that usually means choosing one thing rather than fixing everything at once.
Pick the answer that surprised you most and turn it into a single, specific next step for this week. We look at that gap between insight and action in What Comes After Self-Awareness?
If you want a regular rhythm for these questions rather than a one-off session, a short daily journaling practice is the simplest way to keep asking them.
When your answers point to a gap
Sometimes these questions reveal something uncomfortable: you know what matters to you, but your days don't reflect it. That gap is exactly what Volume 2: Alignment is built for — a 30-day guided journal across four weeks (Execution, Honesty, Reality and Commitment) that helps bring your choices back in line with what you actually value.
If you're newer to this, Volume 1: Awareness comes first — or try the practice with the free 7-Day Guided Journal.
