Why Intentions Don't Stick: The Psychology of Knowing vs. Doing
By Soul Clarity Studio · Created by a paramedic · 12 September 2026
Intentions usually don't stick because they stay vague, rely on motivation and have no plan for the moment they're tested. They stick better as specific if-then plans ("If it's 7am, then I journal for five minutes") and when you track small follow-throughs, which build trust in yourself over time.
You know you should. You've known for a while. And yet, in the actual moment, something else happens instead. This isn't a discipline problem — it's a structural one.
Two different moments, two different selves
An intention is usually formed calmly, in advance, imagining a future version of yourself making the sensible choice. The actual moment of doing arrives under different conditions entirely — tired, distracted, facing real friction right now. The version of you that forms the intention and the version of you that has to act on it aren't operating with the same information or the same resistance.
Why willpower alone keeps failing
Willpower assumes the in-the-moment self will simply remember and comply with what the calm, earlier self decided. But resistance is strongest exactly when the decision needs to be made — which is the worst possible time to be relying on memory and motivation alone.
What actually helps close the gap
Three things make a measurable difference: making the intended action small and specific enough that it doesn't require much motivation to start; honestly tracking the gap itself, rather than avoiding looking at where intentions failed; and checking in often enough — daily, not weekly — to catch drift early, before a single missed choice quietly becomes a new pattern.
This is the practical core of Volume 2: Alignment — a structured way of working through exactly this gap, week by week, rather than relying on willpower to close it in the moment.
